Ernest

Ernest is named in honor of its breeder, Professor Ernest Salmon. It was selected at Wye College in Kent in 1923 from seed collected in 1921, originating as an open-pollinated line of Neomex AA7. The variety underwent on-farm trials in 1957 and 1958 and was later evaluated in brewing trials by the Institute of Brewing in 1959, with results reported in 1960. However, it was ultimately considered an unsuitable replacement for the control variety Fuggle, due to its strong, coarse, American-style aroma character.
